Fedora to Debian & Code::Block

After using Fedora (http://www.fedoraproject.org/) for more then 2 year , I decide to switch to Debian (http://www.debian.org) because Fedora is really going too aggressive in their development. Many of the packages which are actually in their beta days are the part of their official repository. Also packages available in Debian repository are almost thrice then that of those available in the fedora repositories. Though I strongly believe in the philosophy that great packages always come in *tar.gz , but still i am not that much kind to myself to compile vlc or xchm before installing them on my box.

The first things I notice in Debian (off course after noticing its stability :P) is that Code::Block is not a part of the Debian official repository , But still you can install in using the apt repo provided by Jen (http://apt.jenslody.de/) , just by following the instruction given at http://apt.jenslody.de/

Security, Bandwidth Management and Intranet

Security, bandwidth management, UTM ,encrypted network and everything that is implemented to make other feel that intranet network is secure but the question that arises is that do these things are really needed to make the intranets secure what probably I think is that no network in this world can actually block any specific application this does not means that any application cannot do that but the reason is doing that will definitely compromise the security of the network traffic.

Take an example if the xyz college has blocked a website that provide a default application at the port number n and  also provide the same service at the the default web port in encrypted mode then no UTM can actually block it because blocking that encrypted mode means compromising with the security all the websites that are  opened from inside the network on the other hand if you block the domain name then proxy from outside the network will break that blockage giving them a way to open that website from outside.

Solution :

1.Go for open source application because at least they give you opportunity to do some modification and customize the application.
2.Never try to block a website because practically a Google search will give intranet user more then one method to go to that website instead if you actually want to save the bandwidth go for the DOWNLOAD limit.
3.For authentication use credentials as well as the MAC address.
4.Use a centralized authentication system it means even if a student want to use the internet from the college computer then also force the student to enter the credentials so that these internet consumption is also calculated.
5.Provide the student with the essential software from the LAN itself so that students don’t have to use internet bandwidth to download these softwares.

This is the best I actually can think……..

DSpace Installation

This article is from the DSpace Official Documentation.Hope you also Like It…….

Installation

This method gets you up and running with DSpace quickly and easily. It is identical in both the Default Release and

Source Release distributions.

1. Create the DSpace user. This needs to be the same user that Tomcat (or Jetty etc) will run as. e.g. as root run:

useradd -m dspace

2. Download the latest DSpace release [http://sourceforge.net/projects/dspace/] and unpack it. Although there are two

available releases (dspace-1.x-release.zip and dspace-1.x-src-release.zip), you only need to

choose one. If you want a copy of all underlying Java source code, you should download the dspace-1.x-srcrelease.

zip release.

unzip dspace-1.x-release.zip

For ease of reference, we will refer to the location of this unzipped version of the DSpace release as [dspacesource]

in the remainder of these instructions.

3. Database Setup

Open Source for Academics

After a long time I have forced myself successfully to write the blogs again……To be very frank for a long time I have been searching and doing some work on open source for Educational system…..This has first lead me to study the NAAH rules which is the Indian Government Body to give ranks to the Indian Universities. After reading that I realized that their is a huge scope of the open source to be included in the Indian Universities from open archiving Server to ILS to LMS to SSO to Office productivity their is everything that can be officially need to be included in the Indian Educational System…..After carrying out some of open source project for my university i have realized that scope for volunteer work is huge what you need to do is to approach the right official guys and gain their confidence….and once you have done that files flow like a ROCKET in th higher Administration…..After facing a lot of frustration while try to incorporate open source in my Ex. School this is something really motivating for me and one thing for sure I will definitely do this in my school one day when I have……… because failing to do something and frustration is really the motivation me to do that ……
